Henry Lee Gilbert

Henry Lee Gilbert, Sr., was born on August 11, 1930, in McKenzie, Tennessee, to Bailey and Susan Arnell (Haynes) Gilbert. Henry settled in Indianapolis, Indiana, in the late 1940’s and worked as a machine presser at Mack’s Cleaners.  In 1951, Henry enlisted into the United State Marine Corps where he served in the Korean War and received the Korean Services Medal, Purple Heart Medal and United Nations Service Medal. He served until 1959.

Henry met the love of his life, Bobbie Lucille Mitchum, who he affectionately called Barb. They married on December 10, 1965. Their union blessed them with five children. Henry was employed at the United States Postal Service as a Mail Handler and retired in August 1990 after 28 years of service. Henry enjoyed working on cars, providing for and leading his family, and being a Marine Corps Veteran.

Henry is preceded in death by his parents, Baily Sr. and Susan Arnell Gilbert, sister Bettye Lou Porter, and brothers: JB, David, Willie and Bailey Jr. 

Henry is survived by his wife, Bobbie Lucille; sons: Kevin and Henry Jr.; daughters: Susan Lewis (Patrick), Theresa Johns (Russ) and Dawn Ballard (Damon); sisters: Ella Mae Wilson (Charles), Maleader Anne Jointer, Sarah Anne Posey, Della Marie Mitchum (Gordon), Thelma Williams (Thomas); six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; cousins, and a host of nieces and nephews.
